If it was connected backwards, with the positive lead on the negative terminal, and the negative clamp on the positive battery terminal, it is quite likely the battery has been damaged.
There would be no way to repair it, other than replacing the battery. Given the circumstances, it is possible that other components were damaged as well. The severity depends on how long it was hooked up wrong..
